A time of change has again come to the Whoniverse as Pearl Mackie has been announced as the newest companion on Doctor Who. She replaces the departed Jenna Coleman in the challenging role of the Doctor’s assistant.
Peter Capaldi has been aware of the casting for some time but has been silent on addressing the casting directly.
It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who. A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she’s a refreshing addition to the Tardis and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures.
The Radio Times appeared to be ahead of the game by suggesting yesterday that she was in the running for the part.

The web was filled with loads of speculation about who the new companion would be following the departure of Jenna Coleman. An extensive casting search was held which led to speculation that Faye Marsay, Georgina Campbell and Rakhee Thakrar were all at one point in consideration for the role.
Mackie 28, can currently be seen in the West End production of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In the Night-Time from The National Theatre.

Trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School she has appeared in several stage productions including the Royal Shakespeare Company’s A Mad World My Masters. She has also appeared as Anne-Marie Frasier in the UK soap, Doctors and the film Svengali with Martin Freeman.
Very little about her new role has been revealed but we do know she is named Bill and is not sold on The Doctor initially. We also know she will encounter The Daleks!
Mackie commented on her audition and developing the character.
Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in. I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.

Mackie also commented on traveling in the TARDIS.
I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family…It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home.
She also discussed working with Peter Capaldi.
Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space.
BBC America has released a brief clip of The Doctor and Bill together.
Season 10 will air in 2017. It is not known yet if she will appear in the 2016 Christmas Special although she clearly has already done some filming for this trailer.
